Jambuvant Maharaj

Legendary and Historical Significance

Shri Kshetra Jambuvant Gad, Jamkhed (Ta. Ambad, Dist. Jalna) is the only place in Maharashtra and the third in India dedicated to Jambuvant Maharaj, a place of unique and unparalleled spiritual energy.

Located about 1.5 hours from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar or Jalna, Jamkhed village sits on the Dhule-Solapur national highway. In ancient times, this area was part of the Dandakaranya forest. The cave temple, situated 2km from the village in the hills, houses the shrines of Jambuvant, Nal, and Neel, along with Ganpati and Mahadev. This place is popularly known as "Jambuvant Gadi".

It is believed that Jambuvant was born from the yawn of Lord Brahma. Born to Agni Dev and a celestial Gandharva mother in the Satyayuga, he is one of the seven Chiranjivis (immortals) who exist through all four Yugas (Satya, Treta, Dwapara, and Kali). Being born in Satyayuga, he is older than Lord Parshuram and Lord Hanuman. He is a great scholar of the Vedas and a visionary, known as "Rishiraj". He represents a species created by Brahma that combines characteristics of a bear and a human, once more advanced than humans.

Ancient Legends

Treta Yuga: The Ramayana Legend

The Commander of the Divine Army

In the Ramayana, Lord Rama appointed Jambuvant as the commander (Senapati) of his army. He was a master of meditation, warfare, and Ayurveda. When Lakshman was severely injured, it was Jambuvant who advised Hanuman to fetch the Sanjivani herb from the Himalayas. After the war, Jambuvant felt a touch of pride in his strength. Recognizing this, Lord Rama advised him to live in solitude and penance in caves until the Kaliyuga, promising him a chance to test his valor against the Lord Himself in the Krishna incarnation.

A Desire for Solitude

During the search for Sita, Jambuvant served as a key advisor. He was the one who inspired Hanuman to cross the ocean. After the victory, when Rama offered rewards, Jambuvant expressed a desire for solitude and a chance to battle Rama again to prove his prowess. Rama granted him the Jamkhed cave for solitude and promised a battle in the Dwapara Yuga.

Lord Rama granted Jamkhed cave as a place for his eternal penance.

The Battle for the Syamantaka Gem

The legend revolves around the Syamantaka gem. Satrajit had a radiant gem given by Surya Dev. When his brother Prasanjit went hunting with the gem, he was killed by a lion. Jambuvant killed that lion and took the gem to his cave for his daughter to play with. Krishna, accused of stealing the gem, tracked the footprints to the Jamkhed cave. A fierce battle ensued between Krishna and Jambuvant for 28 days. It is said that the Ghamati River was formed from the sweat of their intense struggle. Realizing Krishna was an avatar, Jambuvant apologized, gifted the gem, and gave his daughter Jambuvanti in marriage to Krishna.

The Unique Tradition of 12 Wadis

Due to the immense significance of Jambuvant Maharaj, there are no Hanuman temples in the 12 surrounding "wadis" (Jamkhed, Jogeshwariwadi, BakshichiWadi, Kingaonwadi, Nihalsingwadi, Pachgaownwadi, Lembhewadi, Malewadi, Bhokarwadi, Kauchalyawadi, Vitthalwadi, Naralewadi, and Kombadwadi). Since Jambuvant is older than Hanuman, he is affectionately called "Kaka" (Uncle). In this region, instead of visiting Hanuman temples for auspicious events, people come to Shri Kshetra Jambuvant Gad.

History आणि जीर्णोद्धार

The temple, located in a mountain cave and once difficult to access, was restored in 1993. It now features a spacious hall and modern facilities. Every Friday, the residents of Jamkhed visit for darshan.
